This year marks the 9th edition of the NIRF rankings, and as always, the rankings are expected to bring several surprises, particularly within the management category. The previous year saw significant shifts among top institutions, and this year promises to be no different.

2023: Recap

Before diving into what we can expect this year, let’s reflect on last year’s announcements. In 2023, several notable changes occurred in the rankings:

  • IIM Kozhikode made a significant leap to the #3 position, displacing IIM Calcutta.
  • IIT Delhi dropped from #4 to #5.
  • NITIE Mumbai, now IIM Mumbai, improved its ranking from #9 to #7.
  • Baby IIMs, such as IIM Raipur and IIM Rohtak, saw substantial gains.
  • • Some PGDM B-schools moved to the top 20, for their strong industry relevance and innovative curricula. Jaipuria Noida Jaipuria Noida claimed the 47th spot in 2023, outperforming BIMTECH, which ranked 48, and other top Management institutions in India.
  • Some IITs, including IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur, lost ground in the rankings.
  • Private universities like Amity and Lovely Professional University held relatively high positions.

What to Expect in 2024

  1. IIM Kozhikode’s Consistency

All eyes will be on IIM Kozhikode to see if it can maintain its #3 spot. Over the past few years, IIM Kozhikode has shown a steady rise, moving from #6 in 2020 to #3 in 2023. The question remains whether it can hold its position or move higher.

  1. IIT Delhi’s Potential Comeback

The Department of Management Studies at IIT Delhi, which slipped to #5 last year, will be another focal point. It had previously been on an upward trajectory, so it’s worth watching to see if it can reclaim its #4 position or climb higher.

  1. IIM Mumbai’s Stability

Formerly known as NITIE, IIM Mumbai made a notable jump to #7 last year. Given its consistent growth, it will be interesting to see if it can maintain or improve its ranking as IIM Mumbai in 2024.

  1. Second-Generation IIMs’ Performance

IIM Raipur, IIM Rohtak, and IIM Udaipur significantly improved in 2023. These institutions will be closely monitored to see if they can continue their upward trajectory or if they face setbacks.

  1. PGDM B-Schools in the Spotlight

Only a few PGDM B-schools made it to the top 20 last year, with XLRI, MDI Gurugram, and SPJIMR Mumbai being notable mentions. This year, there will be keen interest in whether more PGDM schools can break into the top ranks, reflecting their industry relevance and high placement records.

  1. IITs’ Recovery

Institutions like IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur, which fell in the rankings last year, will be under scrutiny to see if they can regain their former rankings. Their performance will be critical in this year’s rankings.

  1. Private Universities’ Positions

Private universities that performed well last year, such as Amity and Lovely Professional University, will also be observed to see if they can maintain their rankings amidst fierce competition from government institutions.
