Study Plan to Crack the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026

To excel in a competitive examination like the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026, a candidate must have a strong conceptual understanding of every test area and a well-defined strategy for approaching the exam. Successfully implementing this strategy requires a balanced combination of knowledge, approach, and skills.

These three elements play a crucial role in a candidate’s preparation journey and help them develop the ability to handle the exam effectively. The following sections discuss each of these aspects in detail.

Knowledge

A thorough understanding of the concepts covered in the CAT exam helps a candidate build a strong foundation and achieve a competitive score. It is essential for a candidate to be familiar with the different test areas, exam pattern, difficulty level, and the topic-wise distribution of questions. This understanding allows candidates to plan their preparation effectively and focus on areas that require more attention.

Approach

Along with conceptual knowledge, a candidate must develop effective methods and techniques to solve questions efficiently. Since CAT is a time-bound examination, time management plays a crucial role in determining performance. A candidate should not only understand various concepts but also learn different approaches, shortcuts, and problem-solving techniques to arrive at the correct answer in the least possible time.

Skill

The right combination of knowledge and approach enables a candidate to solve problems accurately and efficiently. However, CAT also evaluates several other skills, such as selecting the right questions, performing under pressure, managing time effectively, and adapting to unexpected situations during the exam.

Therefore, to come out with flying colors, a candidate should be well-equipped with Knowledge, Approach, and Skill.

The CAT 2026 study plan for DI, Reasoning, English, and Quantitative Ability can be divided into four stages:

STAGE 1

A student should attend classes regularly and solve all the problems discussed in class once again at home, ensuring a complete understanding of the concepts.

STAGE 2

Apart from attending classes, the student should thoroughly go through the concepts provided in the study material. The student should first attempt the examples without referring to the solutions and then compare their approach with the methods explained in the solutions. After completing the examples, the student should solve all the problems given in the exercises. The focus during this stage of preparation should be on developing a strong understanding of the fundamental concepts involved.

STAGE 3

A student should solve all the test papers regularly. While attempting the test papers, the student should set a time target and focus on maximizing the net score during this stage of preparation. He/she should develop an individual strategy for approaching each test paper effectively. The emphasis during this stage should also be on identifying shortcomings in each area, if any, including gaps in conceptual understanding and problem-solving methods.

STAGE 4

A student should take AIMCATs regularly and analyze their performance and approach. These tests can be attempted at the rate of one or two tests per week. The primary objective at this stage is to learn how to tackle each section within the overall exam environment and develop the skills required to handle the actual CAT effectively. The candidate should also regularly discuss their AIMCAT performance with faculty members and seek their guidance to improve further.
